It provides for creation of a single Supreme Court in Russia
The legislative bill on the amendment to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, which provides for the creation of a single Supreme Court, has been signed into law today. The Supreme Commercial (Arbitrazh) Court of Russia shall be abolished, and all the issues of dispensation of justice, which were originally assigned to its jurisdiction, shall be transferred into the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.
For the sake of completion of the necessary procedures a 6-month transitional period is envisaged. The law comes into force from the day of its publication (that is, from 7 February 2014).
Besides, the federal constitutional laws on the Supreme Court, on the procedure for selection of candidates to the initial composition of the Supreme Court and on changes to the Federal constitutional law "On the Judicial System of the Russian Federation" have also been signed today. The law on the Supreme Court shall come into force in 180 days upon the publication of the aforementioned law on the constitutional amendment, that is, from 6 August 2014. From that day on the Supreme Commercial Court of the Russian Federation shall cease to exist.
